Sami Souhail Anwari, 23, of Woodbridge, convinced a 51-year-old man to give him a lift while outside of a business at Minnieville Road Monday evening, May 15, PWC County Police said.

Things took a turn when Anwari pulled out a screwdriver and threatened the victim, before hitting him and demanding his car, police said. That's when Anwari got behind the wheel and took off, authorities said.

The victim, who reported minor injuries, called police and reported the incident. Authorities saw the vehicle on Dumfries Road and initiated a traffic stop.

Anwari disregarded the officer’s emergency equipment and struck two parked vehicles while fleeing the area. Officers pursued the vehicle and deployed stop sticks, which ultimately disabled the vehicle in the area of Dumfries and Hoadly Roads, authorities said.

There, Anwari tried running — he didn't get far. After a short foot pursuit, officers took him into custody without further incident. While investigating, officers determined the accused was intoxicated and driving without a valid driver’s license, they said.

Anwari was charged with carjacking, DUI, eluding, and more, and held without bond.
